What is a Combination Starter?

A combination starter is an enclosed motor starter with the added feature of a safety disconnect. The safety disconnect and the starter are “Combined" in a single pre-wired enclosure. This provides additional safety since the door to the starter enclosure cannot be opened unless the power is turned off.

There are typically two types of safety disconnects.

Fusible disconnect with circuit breaker and non-fusible. A fusible disconnect with circuit breaker provides motor on-off control, motor overload protection, and short circuit protection in one package.

Non-fusible disconnects are used where only the safety disconnect is needed and no short circuit protection is required.
